Leachate Testing

Every treatment plant, whether it handles sewage or industrial effluent, produces sludge as a by-product. This leftover material is not something you can simply dispose of without checking what it contains. Sludge can carry heavy metals, chemicals, pathogens and other harmful substances, and disposing of it without testing can create serious environmental and legal problems.

Sawen Group is a QCI and NABL accredited environmental laboratory based in Lucknow. We test sludge from Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) and industrial processes to confirm its composition and guide you on safe and compliant disposal.

If your facility generates sludge and you need to know its exact composition before disposal, reuse or further treatment, our team can guide you through the entire testing process.

What is Sludge Testing?

Sludge testing means analysing the semi-solid waste left over after wastewater treatment to understand its physical, chemical and biological composition. This waste is generated when water is treated in an STP or ETP, and the leftover solids settle at the bottom as sludge.

Since sludge can contain heavy metals, organic matter, chemicals and disease-causing organisms, it needs to be tested before it is disposed of, reused as fertiliser, or sent for further treatment. The results help determine whether the sludge is hazardous or non-hazardous, and guide the correct method of handling it.

Sludge testing is done for:

  • Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) in residential complexes, hotels and institutions
  • Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) in industries
  • Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP)
  • Industrial process waste that produces sludge
  • Facilities looking to reuse treated sludge as manure or compost

Types of Sludge We Test

1. STP Sludge

Sludge generated from Sewage Treatment Plants in residential societies, hotels, hospitals and institutions. This is tested to check organic content, pathogens and suitability for disposal or reuse as manure.

2. ETP Sludge

Sludge generated from Effluent Treatment Plants in industries. This often contains higher levels of chemicals and heavy metals, depending on the industrial process, and requires detailed testing before disposal.

3. Industrial and Hazardous Sludge

Sludge generated from specific industrial processes, such as chemical manufacturing, metal processing or pharmaceutical production. This type of sludge is more likely to contain hazardous substances and needs careful classification and disposal.

Key Parameters Checked in Sludge Testing

Parameter What It Tells You?

pH

Whether the sludge is acidic, neutral or alkaline

Moisture Content

Amount of water present, which affects handling and disposal method

Organic Matter Content

Level of biodegradable material in the sludge

Heavy Metals

Presence of substances like lead, chromium, cadmium and mercury

Total Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium

Nutrient content, important if sludge is considered for reuse as manure

Pathogens and Coliform Count

Presence of disease-causing organisms

Calorific Value

Energy content, relevant if sludge is considered for incineration

Leachability of Toxic Substances

Whether harmful substances can seep into soil or water if disposed of improperly

STP sludge comes from treating domestic sewage and is often less hazardous, sometimes suitable for reuse as manure after proper testing. ETP sludge comes from industrial effluent treatment and may contain higher levels of chemicals or heavy metals, depending on the industry.

In some cases, yes, but only after testing confirms it is safe and free from harmful levels of pathogens or heavy metals. Our team can guide you on whether your sludge is suitable for reuse.

Yes. Sawen Group is a NABL accredited laboratory (Certification No. T-2091), and our sludge reports are accepted for compliance under solid and hazardous waste management regulations.

Our trained staff collects samples directly from the treatment plant using proper methods to ensure the sample represents the true composition of the sludge.

Our team will explain the specific hazards found and guide you on proper storage, handling and disposal methods as per regulatory requirements.

This depends on the type of facility and the volume of sludge generated. Many treatment plants test sludge quarterly or half-yearly. Our team can suggest a suitable schedule based on your operations.
