Surface Water Test

Rivers, lakes, ponds and canals are a major source of water for drinking, farming, industry and daily life across India. But surface water is also the most exposed to pollution, from industrial discharge, sewage, agricultural runoff and waste dumping. This is why regular surface water testing matters.

Sawen Group is a QCI and NABL accredited environmental laboratory based in Lucknow. We test surface water from rivers, lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs to check its quality and confirm whether it meets safety standards set by government bodies.

Whether you need testing for a government project, an environmental study, an industrial requirement, or simply to check the water quality near your area, our team can guide you through the process.

What is Surface Water Testing?

Surface water testing means checking water found on the surface of the earth, such as in rivers, lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs, to find out its physical, chemical and biological quality. Unlike ground water, surface water is directly exposed to the atmosphere, human activity and surrounding land, which makes it more likely to carry pollutants.

The test checks for things like pH, dissolved oxygen, bacteria, chemical contamination and the presence of harmful substances. Once tested, the results are compared against standards set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and other regulatory bodies to confirm if the water is safe for its intended use.

Surface water testing is done for the following purposes:

  • Checking drinking water sources drawn from rivers or lakes
  • Assessing irrigation water quality for farming
  • Monitoring pollution levels near industrial or urban areas
  • Environmental studies and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports
  • Government and municipal water quality monitoring programs

Types of Surface Water Sources We Test

1. Rivers and Streams

Rivers are commonly used for drinking water supply, irrigation and industrial use. We test river water at multiple points to check for pollution from nearby industries, sewage discharge and agricultural runoff.

2. Lakes and Ponds

Lakes and ponds often support local communities, fisheries and irrigation. Testing helps identify issues like algae growth, low oxygen levels and contamination from surrounding land use.

3. Canals and Reservoirs

Canals and reservoirs are widely used for irrigation and water storage. Regular testing confirms that stored or flowing water remains safe for agricultural and community use.

Key Parameters Checked in Surface Water Testing

Parameter What It Tells You?

pH

Whether the water is acidic, neutral or alkaline

Dissolved Oxygen (DO)

Amount of oxygen available to support aquatic life

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

Level of organic pollution in the water

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Amount of dissolved minerals and salts

Turbidity

Clarity of water, affected by suspended particles

Total Coliform and E. coli

Presence of bacteria linked to sewage or waste contamination

Heavy Metals

Presence of substances like lead, arsenic and mercury

Nitrates and Phosphates

Indicators of agricultural runoff or sewage pollution

Chlorides and Sulphates

Mineral content that affects taste and usability

Surface water testing checks water found in rivers, lakes, ponds and canals, which is exposed to the atmosphere and surrounding land. Ground water testing checks water drawn from borewells and underground sources. Both require different sample collection methods and are offered separately by Sawen Group.

Our trained field staff collects samples directly from the water body using standard containers and methods that prevent contamination, ensuring the results reflect the true condition of the water.

Yes. Sawen Group is a NABL accredited laboratory (Certification No. T-2091), and our surface water reports are accepted for Environmental Clearance, EIA studies and other regulatory submissions.

This depends on the purpose. Municipal bodies often test monthly, while industries or agricultural users may test quarterly or seasonally. Our team can suggest a suitable schedule based on your needs.

Yes, testing at multiple points along a river or around a lake can help identify where contamination levels increase, which supports pollution source tracking.

Our environmental consultants review the results and suggest appropriate next steps, such as further investigation, treatment recommendations or reporting to the relevant authority.
